Sirio Gry J – Severing All Ties

sirio-gry-j-severing-all-tiesImagine feeling lost in an alienating sci-fi cyberpunk industrial cinematographic-like dystopia, a metaphor of how the hyper-fragmentated society we live in influences our way of living and not-communicating with other human beings.

This state of things also affects the communication with our inner selves, as we are constantly shot by thousands of informations, in a similar way to the “Magic Bullet” theory theorized by sociologists during the first half of Twentieth century. Most of us have the illusion of being capable to receive all these information bullets and to dodge them when needed, but there’s too much stuff pointing towards us, and often we feel overwhelmed by it, with the result of making it difficult to analyze the outputs received and to stay focused.

In Capitalist Realism, the philosopher Mark Fisher wrote that most people think nothing could be done to change how these mechanisms work, but some underground music, including that of Sirio Gry J, can offer us a chance to momentarily re-establish a connection with ourselves, if we take a bit of time to listen to a release such as Severing All Ties, released on tape by Industrial Complexx on 8th May. Maybe we could start changing something by trying severing all ties with the “social media bubble”, rediscovering a connection with ourselves we sometimes feel forgotten.

Since the artist early efforts, and especially through his work with Monolith Records, Sirio Gry J has always released music which main goal was that of making people think for themselves, shaping each release as a sort of concept album. The same approach was applied also for its music released by Furanum Records, another radical label sharing a similar approach.

Severing All Ties is also a clear portrait of the constant evolution of the artist sound, which never stopped changing through the years, staying loyal to its trademarks, also helped by the Ken Karter mastering. Sirio Gry J music never stops sounding radical and far from easy categorizations. Songs such as Dark Soul, The Shroomer, Nikolae’s Ritual and Crown Of The Fallen Light, highlight the artist musical research in the field of uncompromising dark ambient, while Meta-Stasis (with Scam.), Torn Lungs and, especially, the long Lords Of The Withered Hour, fiercely show the artist most IDM-like side. There’s also room for radical industrial techno in Injection, a desperate industrial-esque run inside an active power plant.

The closing song is a remix done by Beuthen OS (alias of Dominik Müller, founder of Furanum Records) that, with its mechanical heartbeat, establishes a metaphorical connection between physical and artifical, human and machine. The soul of a new machine.
