Schwefelgelb – Aus den Falten

schwefelgelbSchwefelgelb is the German duo Jonas Förster and Philipp Graf, dedicated to engaging techno/EBM music since 2006. They started by mixing techno, EBM, new wave, punk, synth-pop, house in their first releases like Inferno (2006, self-released), Ich Nehm Den Mund Zu Voll (2008, self-released), Alt Und Neu (2008, Tapete Records), just to name a few. Then, with their 2013 release Dunkel Vor Den Augen Uns (2013, Enfant Terrible) they started incorporating harder sounds close to modern techno-industrial, even publishing in 2017 their first Ep for aufnahme+wiedergabe (the leading label in the mixing of techno, EBM, and dark industrial elements) called Dahinter Das Gesicht. A harder sound as already said, but without losing their playful nature and love for enthralling rhythms and structures.

Now they return for the second time under the German label lead by Philipp Strobel with their 12” Aus den Falten, a 4-track vinyl and digital release following the aforementioned path. Here they deliver poundingbeats, sharp bass-lines and filtered vocals, conjuring a lysergic atmosphere and strong club vibes. The first song Obwohl es so aussieht showcases techno-EBM rituals made of obsessive loops and industrial undertones enriched by retro structures and modern cutting sounds. The steady rhythm is the framework for thundering snares and vengeful drum machines, while captivating synths and hypnotizing bass-lines are not forgotten.

Der Pool schweigt follows a minimal approach with more of a “funky” feeling thanks to 80’s bass sounds and crawling rhythms, displaying a moody soundscape going well beyond the simple dance track. Here Schwefelgelb show their versatile nature and their songwriting skills. Wie die Köpfe returns to faster tempos and grooving electronics, layered upon engaging snare-sounds and distorted beats. An old-school fat bass-line dominates the track, but skilfully placed effects and ambiances prevent any kind of boredom. The last number In dem Laken is an acid affair with deep techno structures and looping rhythms, a perfect way to end the EP offering a no-nonsense episode reminding us of Terence Fixmer and Gesaffelstein.

Much more than just another trend-following output, Aus den Falten is a fine example of Schwefelgelb more recent sound. Here we have industrial soundscapes and hard-hitting rhythms, but at the same time a deep understanding of engaging structures and danceable beats. 4 tracks with a common pattern while keeping their own identity and developments: this is what you will find in this recommended release.
